State of Twitter – Some Interesting Demographics

Mashable just published a post on The Path to 10 Billion Tweets, and there’s some very interesting stuff here about Twitter’s demographics. How do the numbers presented here match up with demographics of what you consider to be your most coveted real estate clients?

A few points I found interesting:

  • Over half of Twitter users have an education level of college and graduate school
  • The largest segment of Twitter users is between the ages of 18 and 34
  • Retweets and conversation account for almost half of all tweets (notice the low percentage of self-promotion and spam)
  • A very small percentage of users have more than 500 followers or more than 500 tweets

The ONE Reason To Invest Time Building Online Relationships

From Seth Godin:

In the race between ‘who’ and ‘how many’, who usually wins–if action is your goal. Find the right people, those that are willing to listen to what you have to say, and ignore the masses that are just going to race on, unchanged.

Three Ways Twitter Makes You a Better Real Estate Pro

Notice I didn’t say Twitter makes you more money (although it probably will) or that it can be an integral part of your marketing plan (it can). I’m talking about ways it can make you better at your profession, which is helping people navigate the real estate market as buyers and sellers.

1. Twitter helps you improve communication

If you want to get good at something, you have to practice. And writing updates to Twitter is one way to practice all aspects of your writing. It will make you more aware of your grammar, punctuation, and choice of words. Even the 140 character limit is effective because it forces you to be succinct and direct.

2. Twitter makes you a better listener

Communication isn’t a one way street, and you are likely to find yourself reading a wide array of updates posted by other locals. By immersing yourself in your local Twitter community, you will naturally have a broader and deeper understanding of the people in your market and what is driving them.

3. Twitter helps you establish a real connection with clients

This point may be the most important because it involves moving past your use of Twitter as “just another marketing tool”. Twitter helps you establish relationships with people before, during, and after they are actively involved in the real estate market. Twitter helps you go beyond a list of contacts and helps you build lasting, trust-based connections.

Storytelling And Your Personal Brand

An excellent series of posts over at WebWorkerDaily on using story telling techniques to build your personal brand.

You’re the key character in your story, but there are undoubtedly others too — the people in your contact network, your colleagues and clients, mentors, family and friends, idols and heroes.

Characterization involves using the information you have about yourself to best effect in giving others a clear picture of you.

Blogging is the first thing that comes to mind as a great way to tell your story in a daily/weekly narrative form, but it can also be done using tools like Twitter and Facebook through frequent updates and information fed from other sites (FourSquare, LiveStrong, etc.).

Location, Location, Location…Coming to Social Sites!

It’s the most important thing in real estate, and it’s coming to every online social tool soon. Location is going to be the big trend in the next couple of years, with all the big players jumping into the mix. Of course, the social check in service FourSquare is huge on location already, building it’s entire business around location. In the coming days and weeks, the two big social players, Twitter and Facebook are going to turn on their geo-tagging features as well.

This is good news for out and about real estate professionals! It’s about to get even easier for you to let your clients and potential clients know that you are out and moving in your market on a daily basis!

And check out FourWhere, which mashes up FourSquare information with Google Maps. Now you have yet another opportunity to be influential in your local market simply by making notes and suggestions with your FourSquare account!
